Russian warships visiting Batavia, Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated 17 December 1885

An item reported that on the roads of Batavia, Dutch East Indies [in fact Tandjong Priok] three Russian warships were lying. According to the newspaper Javabode arrived first the Rosboynik (1) and next the Opritchik firing 21 salute shots for the Dutch (Indies) government and another 15 for the admiral. After this salute went the Russian consul on board. In the morning of the 14th arrived the Russian admiral ship. There were none further details supplied about the destination and the purpose of the voyage supplied. The Java-bode of Friday the 18th reported that the Russian admiral on last Tuesday visited the Dutch commander in chief. It became known that the original destination had been Manila, Philippines. While there was no possibility for to be docked departed the ships via Singapore towards Batavia. The Rasboynik was to be docked at Onrust (3) and then the ships were bound via Cape of Good Hope towards Kronstadt. Yesterday at 14.00 o’clock left the admiral ship Wladimir Monarch (4) and the Opricnik to the North.

1. Sloop often called a clipper Razboinik, laid down at Nevski in 1877, launched in 1878, in 1880 and scuttled ion 2 January 1905. Of the Kresier-class with an armament of 3-6” guns, 4-4.2” guns, 4/6-1pd revolvers and 1 surfaced 15” torpedo tube.
2. Sloop often called a clipper Opritchnik, laid down at the Baltic Works in 1879, launched in 1880, completed a year later and in 1898 hulked. Of the Kresier-class with an armament of 3-6” guns, 4-4.2” guns, 4/6-1pd revolvers and 1 surfaced 15” torpedo tube.
3. According to the annual account of the Dutch Department of Colonies over 1886 were all three ships ‘repaired’ the Onrust.
4. Armoured cruiser Vladimir Monarch, laid on 1880 at the Baltic works, launched in 1882 and sunk after the battle of Tsushima on 28 May 1905. With a displacement of 5.593-6.000 (design) tons were her dimensions 90,30 x 15,85 x 8,0 metres. Speed 15,2 knots. Armament consisted of 4x1-8” guns, 12-6” guns, 4-3.4” guns, 4-3pd and 8-1pd revolvers and 3-15” surfaced torpedo tubes.
