Salvage of the wrecks at Sevastopol, Russia according to the Whalemen’s Shipping List dated Tuesday 26th July 1859

An item referred to tidings received from Sevastopol, Russia reported the salvage of 18 vessels consisting of brigs, schooners and 1-18 gun corvette. Of the 28 were 15 in rather good condition, the others were broken into parts but their copper, sheathing and timber valuable enough for spending salvage costs. The vessels were sold on location or sent to Odessa and Constantinople. At the salvage were around 21 Americans and 60-70 Russians active.(1)

1. The wrecks were a result of the Crimean war (4 October 1853-12 February 1856) going on with France, England, Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom Sardinia were united against the Russian empire.
