Dutch tin dredger Soengei Liat built at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper De Indische Courant dated 23 August 1938

An item reported that the Dutch tin dredger Soengailiat [Soengei Liat] was at moment just completed by the Droogdok Maatschappij ‘Soerabaia” for account of the Dutch East Indies Government to be used for tin mining at Banka. In fact was her building via the Technical Office of the Department for Colonies at The Hague, Netherlands ordered at the shipyard Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands. The pontoon was complete built at Surabaya using the drawings of Gusto while the other parts were manufactured in the Netherlands and fitted by the Droogdok Maatschappij ‘Soerabaia”. She was electrically powered feed by a 6.000 volt cable from the shore. The dredger was able to dredge separated in soil layers with and without ore. Her buckets were driven with an adjustable speed a 400hp electro motor. The buckets had a capacity of 425 litres. Maximum working depth below the water level was 28 metres. The ore was at the aft ship in a special washing device further cleaned from sand and so on. The necessary powerful pumps were located in two separated pump rooms. The electrical equipment was delivered by the N.V. Electro-Slikkerveer. The shipyard Gusto sent chief engineer V. Gerosa to act as supervisor during the assembling at Surabaya. The dredger would probably be towed in the first half of October towards Banka.
